“I promised my parents they would never go to a nursing home” -Theresa Maskrey

Most families make promises out of love.

I did too.

I promised my parents that they would never have to live in a nursing home. I believed that no matter what happened, family would always take care of family. Keeping our loved ones at home felt like the most loving thing we could do.

At the time, I was convinced there wasn’t a better option.

A Promise Passed Down Through Generations

My parents made the same promise to my grandparents.

They believed that when the time came, family would step in and provide whatever care was needed. It was simply what you did.

So when it became my turn, I made the very same promise.

No matter how difficult life became, I believed keeping my parents with family would always be the right choice.

Life Changed More Than We Expected

My mother-in-law lived with our family for twelve years.

At the time, I didn’t realize we had become members of what many people call the “Sandwich Generation.” We were raising two teenagers while also caring for an aging parent.

Like many families, we believed we could handle it all.

We continued working full-time careers while trusting that Mom and the kids could manage during the day. We loved one another, worked hard, and genuinely believed we were doing what was best.

For a while, it seemed manageable.

Then things slowly began to change.

The Daily Struggles Started to Grow

Life became increasingly chaotic.

Balancing two careers, two teenagers, and an aging parent was far more challenging than we had imagined.

Still, we stayed committed to our promise.

We told ourselves that caring for an aging parent was supposed to be difficult. We were determined to make it work because we believed keeping Mom at home was always the best solution.

We Thought It Was Just Part of Getting Older

Over time, Mom became increasingly argumentative.

Some days she seemed unusually confused.

Other days she forgot things that normally wouldn’t have been forgotten.

At the time, we assumed these changes were simply part of aging.

Looking back now, we realize we were missing the warning signs.

What we interpreted as stubbornness and normal aging was actually something much more serious.

The Appointment That Changed Everything

Eventually, we decided to seek help from a physician who specialized in geriatrics.

Because we couldn’t find one nearby, we drove all the way to Chicago so Mom could receive a thorough evaluation.

The report we received changed everything.

Although we spent every day with her, we hadn’t recognized the clear signs of cognitive decline.

The behaviors we had explained away weren’t simply the challenges of getting older.

They were symptoms of illness.

There is a significant difference between growing older and becoming ill.

We Finally Understood What Was Happening

During that appointment, we learned that Mom had become incontinent and was struggling with basic toileting tasks.

Those arguments we had been having weren’t intentional.

They were early symptoms of dementia.

She was also losing her eyesight, and combined with her dementia, it was no longer safe for her to prepare meals or stay home alone while we were at work.

That realization was heartbreaking.

Every day we had been leaving her alone because we genuinely believed she was safe.

We discovered that despite all our love and good intentions, we weren’t providing the level of care she truly deserved.

Love Alone Isn’t Enough

That was one of the hardest lessons our family has ever learned.

Providing exceptional care for aging loved ones requires much more than simply keeping them at home.

It requires knowledge.

It requires experience.

It requires training.

It requires consistent supervision.

Most importantly, it requires understanding the physical and cognitive changes that come with aging-related illnesses.

We loved my mother-in-law deeply, and she knew she was loved.

But love alone could not meet all of her care needs.

How Our Experience Became Shepherd Premier Senior Living

Although it’s difficult to look back and realize there were things we could have done differently, we also believe that no experience is ever wasted.

Our family’s journey ultimately led us to become part of Shepherd Premier Senior Living.

Today, we have the privilege of helping seniors receive the kind of compassionate, personalized care we wish we had understood years earlier.

Our residents live in warm, comfortable homes where they receive award-winning care while maintaining the dignity, respect, and quality of life every senior deserves.

Seeing seniors thrive in our homes reminds us every day why this mission matters.

It has become our life’s work.

If You’re Caring for an Aging Parent

Keeping a loved one at home is absolutely possible.

Whether that home is your own or one specifically designed to provide senior care, the goal should always be the same:

To give your loved one the highest quality of life possible while ensuring they receive the care, safety, and supervision they truly need.

You don’t have to navigate that journey alone.

With the guidance of experienced professionals, families can make informed decisions that protect both their loved ones and themselves.

Sometimes the greatest act of love isn’t simply keeping someone at home.

Sometimes it’s making sure they’re receiving the care they deserve.
