A firsthand account of how the Shepherd Premier Sterling team responded with speed, compassion, and grace under pressure.
There are moments in senior care that reveal the true character of a team. January 27, 2026 was one of those moments for us at Shepherd Premier Sterling.
At approximately 3:00 PM on a cold Tuesday afternoon, a fire sprinkler pipe burst in the attic directly above our memory care unit. Within minutes, water was pouring through the ceiling at an alarming rate, spreading through the back wing of our building. It was an unexpected, fast-moving situation — exactly the kind of event that tests the strength of any care community.
What happened next is something we are deeply proud of.
Everyone Safe. No One Hurt. Not a Single Resident Got Wet.
The moment the alarm sounded, our care team moved into action. By the time firefighters and EMS arrived on scene, our staff had already moved nearly every resident outside to safety. Every single person was accounted for quickly and calmly — an extraordinary feat when you consider the number of residents who require individualized assistance and the speed at which the situation unfolded.
No one got hurt. No one got wet. In the middle of a genuine emergency, our caregivers had already done their job.
A Community That Showed Up
What struck us in the aftermath wasn’t just the professionalism of our own team — it was the response of the entire Sterling community. The City of Sterling helped coordinate buses and connected us with the local Senior Center, which immediately opened its doors to our residents and provided them with a warm dinner while we worked through our emergency plan. EMS personnel stayed on-site, ensuring every resident was comfortable and safe throughout the transition.
Sterling, Illinois showed up for us, and that means everything.
The Plan Worked — Because We Had One
Part of what made the response so smooth was preparation. Our emergency plan designated our Dixon location as the backup facility in the event of a disaster. Within hours of the pipe burst, our team had arranged transportation, transferred beds, loaded medication carts, packed clothing and linens, and settled every resident at Dixon — all while simultaneously coordinating cleanup and structural assessment with our construction team back in Sterling.
The one resident who was bedridden was transported to the hospital as a comfort measure while arrangements were finalized — a decision made with their wellbeing at the forefront. Every decision that day was made that way.
This Is What Family-Owned Care Looks Like
At Shepherd Premier, we often say that smaller is better. Our boutique model — 30 residents per home — isn’t just a marketing tagline. It’s the reason our team knows every resident by name, by preference, by need. It’s the reason that when chaos arrived at 3:00 PM on a January afternoon, our caregivers didn’t hesitate. They knew exactly who needed help, how to help them, and how to move quickly without causing fear or confusion.
That kind of deep, personal knowledge is only possible in a smaller, family-centered community. And moments like this one prove why it matters.
To Our Residents, Families, and the Sterling Community
If you are a family member of one of our Sterling residents, we want you to know: your loved one was never alone, never unsafe, and never uncared for — not for a single moment of that day. Our team’s commitment to the people in our care doesn’t waver when things get hard. If anything, it deepens.
To the City of Sterling, EMS, the local Senior Center, and everyone who helped that day — thank you. You reminded us why this community is such a special place to call home.
And to our team at Shepherd Premier Sterling: we are so proud of you.
